How To Check the Quality Of Your Backlinks

The quality of the link which you create is more important than the number of links. A few links which are of good quality can benefit you much more than hundreds of links from directories and forums which are not relevant to your site.

Backlinks, also knows as Inbound links are the incoming links to a blog or website which is entirely based on linking technology. For Example a website link you to their site then it will be consider as a Backlink or Inbound link.

How can you know the quality of a link which you create? Here are three instruments which you can use to measure the quality of a link which you’re planning to create.

       1. Page Rank (PR)

This is the first metric which can be used to measure the quality of an inbound link. To keep it simple, Page Rank is the scale created by Google to rank a website using a secret and complex algorithm. The scale ranges from 0-10. The concept behind page rank is simple. When a website links to your site, Google counts that as a vote from that website. If there are more links to your site, then your website is more trustworthy in Google’s eyes. If a site links to you, it is considered that website appreciates your content and wants to share it with their readers. Links from well established websites are considered to be the best, because they’re already ‘good’ in Google’s eyes. If a high PR website links to your site, then the link juice is transferred to your site. Page Rank is calculated by carrying out complex algorithms. Google rolls out these updates once in a while; most probably in a few months time.

There is another important thing which would correlate to Page Rank. It’s the number of outgoing links a page is having. The PR juice of a page gets split up and is equally given to each of the outgoing dofollow links. The higher the number of outbound links, the lower the link juice is. You should always try to create backlinks from pages with less number of outgoing links. This answers the question, why you don’t get much benefit from commenting on a dofollow blog which is spammed to death by commentators.

       2. Domain Authority (DA)

Domain authority is another highly important factor which determines if a link is worth going for. Domain Authority Ranking is a calculation strategy developed by SEOmoz. It is used to measure the relevance, authority and the ranking of a particular website. Only the primary / root domain is used in the calculation, and none among the internal pages are being checked. So it’s very good to observe MozRank of a website.

You can check the title and meta description tags to make sure that the website from which you’re going to link to your site, is of the same niche as yours. Remember to check this before you create any backlink. It’s not good to have many irrelevant backlinks to your site from directories and forums. It’s always good to have relevant links to your site, because Google checks the relevancy of the backlinks you’ve created to make sure that you’re not automating the process to disguise as an authentic website.

       3. Page Authority

Undoubtedly, this is the most important among the three metrics used to measure the quality of an inbound link. It’s the ultimate factor for which you should look for, while searching for opportunities to link to your site.

Every website has a page authority. The Page Authority of the website from which you create the backlink shows how much influence that page was able to transfer to your site. The characteristic features of high PA pages are that they are shared and linked frequently by other websites. Search Engines consider this highly important. If you’re able to get a backlink from a website with a high PA, then it means that it will boost your ranking more.

       4. How to Check These Metrics

I’m sure that you’ll be confused about checking these metrics. There are many software applications and online tools which will help you accomplish this task. If you’re looking for a browser based solution, then an add-on or extension can solve your problem. If you’re going for an offline solution, then software applications like Keyword Blaze and Market Samurai can be used, so that you don’t need to be on your browser to check these rankings. However, you’ll need an Internet connection to do this, which I think, you’ll have guessed. There are already many add-ons which will help you view these rankings for any page you visit. My personal favorites are SEO Site Tools and MozBar. Alternatively, you can try SEO Quake Extension or Add-on. It serves the purpose of both the plugins in one single extension or add-on. And luckily, it’s available for Firefox and Google Chrome. Check this article for a list of 7 Useful Google Chrome Extensions.

Using Different SEO Tools To Measure The Quality:
With SEO Site Tools, you can check the PR and all other ranking factors right away from your browser without even clicking any button. It’s all pre-loaded; you just need to click the Tool Bar to reveal all the ranking factors about that particular site or page. These tools can be used for analyzing competition and link building. It helps you in your journey to identify websites similar to that of yours to link from.

The MozBar has got 2 great features. Firstly, you will be able to display all the information regarding a page which includes PA and DA. In addition to that, you’ll be able to check the external and internal links for a page.

Secondly, it automatically adds an overlay for each search engine results, and thus helping you view the important metrics without going to the website. It’s good for analyzing competition while researching a keyword or a domain. And it is useful while you’re searching for link building opportunities.

Being aware of the quality of the links that you are trying to obtain are vastly important to any link building campaign. These metrics can help you save a lot of time by helping you to focus on the links that are going to provide you with the most beneficial results.
